Now that the tanks are installed and the lakes built in Magadi, we are back focusing on work at the REM school in Ngong.
We have four major areas we are currently focused on and could use your support:
1. We just sent 5 of the farmers to “Farming God’s way” training.
See https://farming-gods-way.org/ for more details.
Our prayer is that this approach will reduce erosion, insects, weeds and water requirements and greatly increase crop productivity. Now trained, test plots are being planned.
2. We are building the large garage in the photo to store tools, transportation vehicles, farm equipment and have a repair bay where our mechanic can safely work on the REM vehicles.
This building will protect our bus and other items from the elements. Construction is almost complete, but we have only about half the funding covered so far.
3. We are finally venturing into raising fish! We will be building 4 ponds (16Mx12Mx1.5M deep) each.
We estimate that we will be able to raise 1,600 tilapia fish every 6 months with these ponds.
Their main diet will be a floating water plant called Azolla, which can grow for free on each of the ponds.
We hope to break ground on this before year end 2025.
4. And finally, we will be raising bees, which will be good for honey and crop pollination.
We hope to start with 20 hives before year end 2025 with plans to grow to 50 in the next year or two.
Both the fish and bees are an excellent, economical way to provide food for our students.
We thank you for your support over the years to increase agriculture for our students and pray you will join us again on these new adventures.
